Due to the trend of media use and the concern on its misuse as a result of the development in digital media and information technologies that lubricate the information and communication system and enhance self-generated contents, the need for a better understanding and proper assessment of the media contents toward development is paramount. It is on this note that governments, professionals, agencies, and institutions embrace the concept and the global agenda of media and information literacy. United Nation Economic Social (UNESCO) key in to this global initiative in 2019 when it ran a free three-month certificate course tagged Mass Open Online Course on Digital Media and Information Literacy to educate people on how to relate with the media.
The 2021 Twitter ban by Nigerian government due to the media misuse and its detriment on unity and peaceful coexistence in Nigeria rekindle the interest and effort of the department in relaunching and expanding the scope of the 2019 media and information literacy course.
